Grand Blue’s Anime Isn’t Nearly As Funny As The Community Makes It Out To Be

Don’t get us wrong, Seasonal Prattle finds Grand Blue funny. We chuckle at some of the jokes and get a giggle out of their corresponding expressional work. But that’s just it. It’s just a chuckle or a giggle. Nothing more, nothing less.

We’ve never been at this level with the show, or even this one. However, the greater whole of Grand Blue’s conversation comfortably is – praising every gag and silly face as a complete riot from start to finish.

And this leaves us wondering, are we missing something? Is there a piece that we’re not getting that makes sequences like this a definite gut buster?

“Haw, haw drinking so funny xD”

Especially when that joke is hammered over and over again right?

Look, we know someone somewhere is rolling their eyes thinking it’s a “recurring joke”, thus the 14th rendition of Iori getting tricked into drinking alcohol, just like the cast getting naked, is still totally hilarious and not stale at all.

That same person apparently never heard of a “repetitive joke” – which is what the above and other bits of Grand Blue’s comedy truly are.

With a recurring joke you have evolution. The joke in question is gradually crafted and developed over the course of the series, hardly being delivered in the same way each time. It remains relatively fresh this way, a familiar experience but with enough shake to keep it effective.

On the other hand, a repetitive joke is one that’s unnecessarily pounded at viewers over and over again with little variation in presentation / execution. The hopes are “it was funny once it will be funny the next time” regardless of its amount of incarnations.

Ultimately the repetitiveness of Grand Blue‘s jokes hold us back from being slayed by this show’s humor. We might snicker the first time Iori accidentally drinks, but it gets old fast – lacking the touch and snap to make its delivery consistently hit home time and time again.

Of course, comedy is highly subjective and viewer’s mileage will vary, not to mention the manga might have a way better grasp of the timing and rhythm needed to pull off some of these gags (we’re coming from an anime only view point so fill us in if the manga was better).

Be that as it may, we can’t honestly cosign Grand Blue being the pinnacle comedy this year like the community is making it out to be. Hell, it’s questionable if Grand Blue is even the funniest show this Summer as the genre space is actually pretty competitive this season.

So sure, Grand Blue is funny. But is it “OMG I’m dying on the floor and pissing myself” funny as many have claimed? Ehhh that one might be a reach.

  1. I hadn’t actually thought much about this show. I know some people are quite enjoying it but the basic premise didn’t sound remotely like something I would be interested in. Watching the clip you provided, I’m convinced I will never watch this one. That just isn’t the kind of thing that is going to hold my interest. Still, as long as someone is having fun.

  2. “And this leaves us wondering, are we missing something?”

As I’ve said many times, not every anime is for everyone.

I think that it doesn’t help that Grand Blue is style of comedy rarely seen in anime – it’s not set in high school, and it’s not very tropish. It’s set in college, and it very decidedly borrows much from Animal House and other raunchy comedy movies – and it’s not afraid to be in your face. That’s very much an acquired taste.

    1. Agreed, Grand Blue’s brand of humor certainly isn’t for everyone, and it does indeed feel like it would be an acquired taste.
