SSSS.Gridman Is Honestly Underwhelming Beyond Its Visual Craft (Follow-Up)

SSSS.Gridman is just the gift that keeps on giving around here. What was once a Fall anime that had Seasonal Prattle optimistic, luring us in with a wonderful arsenal of craft choices, has quickly soured with each passing week as it finds new and exciting ways to reach for the high bar of mediocrity when pen is put to paper to compose any written element.

But you know that, well, that is if you’ve been around here recently. We’ve discussed SSSS.Gridman’s shortcomings earlier, both at its opening stages textually in a broader more collected manner, and then specifically at its mid-point when it decided to dissolve nearly all major mysteries up until then with a lazily written exposition dump surrounded by silly plot beats. That piece wasn’t exactly so collected or broad, as episode six’s scripting had a lot of frustration to offer which was certainly vented.

Be that as it may, since that piece, we’ve received more messages than we really expected on the topic – with a bunch of them in some form or another questioning how can we possibly not be onboard with this latest Trigger work.

So we waited until it’s complete and now here we are, ready to quickly answer that:

Simply put what we’ve already outlined about SSSS.Gridman came to fruition and then some – so there’s honestly not much need to extrapolate. The series inevitably ended up dying on one last bed of undercooked writing, we won’t spoil the last episode’s content so don’t worry if you haven’t seen it yet, but to be extremely charitable it was rough in addressing its own loose ends and had its share of “quick fixes” to Gridman’s latest hurdles.

Top that off with a final scene that screams to the highest mountains “cliche” and the sinking realization that the vast majority of our cast’s character writing can still fit inside a miniature candy bar’s nutritional label – you pretty much get to see a microcosm of why we aren’t anywhere near high on the show.

With full hindsight, we stand by our general thoughts of SSSS.Gridman’s writing being a stark contrast to its lavish production in terms of quality.
