Is Planet With Finally Getting The Respect That It Deserves?

The Story

When addressing the question in the title, “Is Planet With Finally Getting The Respect That It Deserves?” The choice may appear like a clear yes or no. Yes, Planet With has picked up some semblance of positive steam in comparison to roughly its first month of content. But, is it really getting the acknowledgment of a top-tier title this season? That’s where things can get a little tricky.

Elaborate

While we’ve discussed the relevancy of scores on Seasonal Prattle in the past, it’s still an okay barometer for getting a quick pulse on a series. If you check out Planet With’s score you’ll see it’s staggeringly low, a complete red flag for a series that’s supposedly a brighter spot this Summer.

Go on

However Planet With’s conversation speaks a different story. There’s still plenty of praise from its following, both in the form of PW’s structure and base writing. Be that as it may, that’s really no different from its status in July. Sure there’s a few more voices singing its praises here in September, but the amount of bigger creatives in the community discussing the work is still lacking, as is its overall popularity.

The Bottom Line

Sadly Planet With continues to be low-balled all in all. Perhaps after its finale someone with a louder voice  will actually dedicate time to it and it will gain attention. Don’t hold your breath.

“QUOTE OF THE WEEK”

AniTwitter after Happy Sugar Life dropped its best episode yet. Seasonal Prattle has to admit, when that knife went through flesh it was a little more than we bargained for.

Steins;Gate 0 (20)

Riding on sturdy storytelling fundamentals can still consistently pilot your twenty minutes of content into comfortable places, especially if that content is paired with a solid emotional hook like it is here. This latest Steins;Gate 0 may not have had the visual craft to completely nail the atmosphere it’s attempting to convey like earlier in the season, however, there’s still enough competency to make scenes like Ruka’s land flush and keep our overall time spent satisfying.

Revue Starlight (9)

There is something magical about the way Revue Starlight manages to use every little detail in an episode to weave a complete narrative and sell its own drama. Even if you completely ignore the show’s overall thematic aptitude and its use of theater motifs – the way they cleanly prop up Karen and Banana this week to further solidify their characters – there’s still plenty to treasure. Kinema Citrus’ illustration of Starlight’s subtext is lovely, with great use of imagery and a level of cohesion that keeps it all digestible. At this point It’s hard to imagine this series not being able to stick the landing with its current level of quality.

Worthwhile Prattle:

BANANA’S “STARLIGHT”

Satsuriku no Tenshi (10)

Whatever last shreds of touch and subtly Satsuriku no Tenshi had are completely gone as this series’ scripting somehow manages to lower its already dirt level bar further into the ground. It’s actually becoming a feat that J.C. Staff can get away with this blunt level of characterization, hardly being able to string together a handful of scenes without force feeding viewers Rachel or Zack’s psyche. We’ve gotten to the point where even the straight forward dialogue is accompanied by even more blatant scenario writing.

Asobi Asobase (9)

The show still has the sense of energy, comedic timing, and grip on storytelling that makes it so effective in out of its key beats. Asobi Asobase’s  build and delivery of jokes remains a strong pleasure.

Attack on Titan s3 (7)

This show has built such an intriguing world that checking in on any character feels like a treat, and Attack on Titan never wastes those opportunities – every moment pushes the central narrative forward in smart ways while offering poignant pockets of information for our core cast. This series’ level of writing is sneakily successful even in small moments.

Planet With (9)

The way Planet With navigates its narrative is yet again very applaudable this week; Not only did we get plenty of clean cuts and core writing that serve to resolve the greater struggle Souya is facing, but also enough dedication to Benika and Yousuke to provide volume to their respective views without them drowning out the episode. Mizukami deserves every ounce of credit for pulling off this balancing act.

Happy Sugar Life (9)

Little creative cuts throughout this week’s back end really help lend Happy Sugar Life power where it counted the most; They’ll likely get overlooked, but these kind of craft touches go a long way to keep this adaptation from falling flat on its heavier scenes. And that’s very important as Happy Sugar Life might catch some heat for its writing in its early half, but its second half has it standing up on its own two feet and then some.

  1. Planet With almost seems like a barometer for Summer 2018. I’ve read about lots of folks dropping titles, but interestingly, not the same titles. And a title one person drops is the same title another praises. Seems like the series this season speak to wide variety of interests — but not all of them at once.

Like Planet With! Crisp writing, brisk plot, interesting characters, solid animation, interstell conflict — for me, there’s a lot to like. But it’s not getting traction.

Why do you think it’s not getting recognition? Is it as simple as “someone with a louder voice?” Or do you think there’s more to it?

    1. I do think it’s just as simple as someone with louder voice hasn’t really talked about it. For the most part, everyone I’ve seen who actually interacted with it seems to enjoy it so I really feel that this is mainly a matter of exposure.
