Can You Trust Irozuku Sekai no Ashita kara Long-Term?

It’s arguably an understatement to say Irozuku Sekai no Ashita kara is turning heads early, The P.A. Works product is just so dominant up front with its visual craft – weaving scenes together with grace and pairing them with a gorgeous coat of production polish even during passive beats – to the extent it can sell viewers on that strength alone.

Mechanically? It’s no slouch, loaded with elements that are easy to celebrate. Elements that demonstrate strong grounded storytelling. That’s the methodical pace, the well-observed character acting, the keen awareness of narrative fundamentals down to the dialogue.

Yeah, Irozuku looks like a seasonal anime with plenty of competence that has a good set of tools to make a shot at AOTS down the road.

But just how long can this train chug? That’s the real question here. Six to seven weeks from now will this be the same dynamic work, or will it take a step down into disappointing territory?

It’s a reasonable concern given the mixed bag quality that original projects in this medium have offered in recent times. It’s even more reasonable when you consider Irozuku Sekai no Ashita kara is inherently shaping up as a story of adolescences that’s fundamentally a dime a dozen, and thus, needs to more aptly lean on outside aspects to create elevation.

There could be some growing pains that jeopardize its quality moving forward as Irozuku implements the narrative wrinkles and craft that separate it from the pack.

That truth will reveal itself over time, and likely not before this season’s halfway point, but the signs so far have been encouraging. Between its outright craft, both visually and textually, and the staff backing it, it’s hard to imagine this series not amounting to a top-tier title this Fall even if it has a bit of a rough patch when it’s all said and done.

There’s some risk in sticking with it, sure, and nobody wants to be lead on by a promising anime only to end up with a letdown. but Irozuku Sekai no Ashita kara is a work I’d trust, whether we’re talking long-term or otherwise.

  1. Based on the 3rd ep, it’s still shaping up nicely… (Even though several characters are in possession of the Stupid Ball by plot necessity. I hate that.) I think the make-or-break will be next week when we finally “meet” Granny in her younger form.

    1. Younger granny looks to be promising. At the very least she’s positioned to give the cast another dimension.
